Sentenced in Russia Brittney Griner: 9 years imprisonment for American basketball player: Brittney Yevette Griner is an American professional basketball player for the Phoenix Mercury of the Women's National Basketball Association currently incarcerated in Russia. She played college basketball for the Baylor Lady Bears in Waco, Texas. She had been convicted in August: the basketball player must serve nine years in prison and must pay a one million ruble (nearly 16,000 euros) fine. The reason? She had liquid electronic cigarettes containing hashish oil in her luggage.
As Interfax news agency reported, the Moscow Appeals Court upheld the nine-year prison sentence for American basketball player Brittney Griner.
The American basketball player was found guilty of drug possession. She had been convicted in August: the basketball player must serve nine years in prison and must pay a one million ruble fine.
White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Brittney Griner was the victim of a "sham prosecution" and continues to be "unjustly" detained in Russia under "intolerable circumstances." The White House's resolve is to bring the American basketball player back home.
Brittney Griner admitted, pleading guilty, to carrying drugs in her luggage, but reiterated that the crime she committed was not intentional.
Inside her luggage Brittney Griner had liquid electronic cigarettes containing drugs.
